There are two kinds of flashcarts that the 3DS can use: DS mode and 3DS mode.
DS flashcarts
Most modern DS flashcarts work on the 3DS just as they did on the DS and DSi. Luma3DS enables even older flashcarts that the 3DS blocks.
Some very old ones like the original R4 require workarounds to be used on the 3DS.
TODO: List the workarounds. |
3DS flashcarts
3DS flashcarts are not recommended. You are not likely to get support for using these today. |
There are two primary flashcarts: Gateway 3DS and Sky3DS. Any other flashcarts were clones of these.
Gateway 3DS
Gateway 3DS was the first flashcart for the 3DS, and one of the earliest ways to run 3DS games from a flashcart. It required its own custom firmware to function.
Sky3DS
Sky3DS is the second kind of flashcart. Unlike Gateway, it doesn't require modifications to the console to use.
