Required Reading

This is a manual version of finalizing setup, for when all other options have been exhausted and the script does not work.

What You Need

  • The latest release of FBI (Both the 3dsx and the cia file)
  • The latest release of Anemone3DS (the cia file)
  • The latest release of FTPD (direct download)
  • The 3.7.4 release of Checkpoint (Direct download)
  • The latest release of HBL_Launcher_Wrapper (direct download)
  • The latest release of Universal-Updater (direct download)
  • The latest release of Godmode9 (direct download)

Instructions

Section I - Prep Work

  1. Power off your device
  2. Insert your SD card into your computer
  3. Create a folder named3dson your sd card.
    • You may already have this from a earlier section in the guide.
  4. Place FBI.3dsx into the 3ds folder on the sd card.
  5. Create a folder named cias on the root of the sd card.
  6. Place FBI.cia, Universal-Updater.cia, Anemone3DS.cia, ftpd.cia, hblauncher_loader.cia and Checkpoint.cia in the cias folder.
  7. Create a folder named payloads in the luma folder on your sd card.
  8. Copy godmode9.firm from the godmode9 zip file to the luma/payloads folder.
  9. Copy the gm9 folder from the godmode9 zip file to the root of your sd card.

Section II - CFW Check

  1. Power off your console
  2. Hold the (Select) button
  3. Power on your console while still holding the (Select) button
    • If the check was successful, your console should have booted into the Luma3DS configuration menu
  4. Press (Start) to save and reboot
  5. Power off your console
Critical icon If you do NOT boot into the Luma3DS configuration menu, custom firmware was not installed on your console. Join Nintendo Homebrew on Discord and ask, in English, for help

Section III - Updating the System

  1. Update your console by going to System Settings, then “Other Settings”, then going all the way to the right and using “System Update”
    • Updates while using B9S + Luma (what you have) are safe
    • The updater may display a message saying “Your system is up to date” instead of updating. This is normal if you are already up to date; continue to the next section
    • If this gives you an error, set both your DNS settings and Proxy settings to “Auto”
    • If this still gives you an error, follow this troubleshooting guide


Section IV - RTC and DSP setup

  1. Press (Left Shoulder) + (D-Pad Down) + (Select) at the same time to open the Rosalina menu
    • If one of these buttons is broken, download this config.ini and put it in your luma folder, replacing the existing one. This will change the Rosalina menu key combination to (X) + (Y)
  2. Select “Miscellaneous options”
  3. Select “Dump DSP firmware”
  4. Press (B) to continue
  5. Select “Nullify user time offset”
  6. Press (B) to continue
  7. Press (B) to return to the Rosalina main menu
  8. Press (B) to exit the Rosalina menu

Section V - CIA Installation

  1. Open the Activity Log Application
  2. Press (Left Shoulder) + (D-Pad Down) + (Select) at the same time to open the Rosalina menu
  3. Select “Miscellaneous options”
  4. Select “Switch the .hb title to the current app”
  5. Press (B) to continue
  6. Press (B) to return to the rosalina main menu
  7. Press (B) to exit the rosalina menu
  8. Close Activity Log
  9. Reopen Activity Log
    • This should open the homebrew launcher
  10. Select FBI from the list of homebrew
  11. Click SD, then click cias.
  12. Click a CIA file, then click install and delete all CIAS.
  13. Close FBI
    • 6 new applications should be on the home menu.

Section VI - NAND Backup

  1. Power off your console
  2. Press and hold (Start), and while holding (Start), power on your console. This will launch GodMode9
    • If you do not boot into GodMode9, ensure that you copied godmode9.firm to the luma/payloads folder of your SD card and that the folders are not misnamed (e.g. playloads.)
    • If you are prompted to create an essential files backup, press (A) to do so, then press (A) to continue once it has completed.
    • If you are prompted to fix the RTC date&time, press (A) to do so, then set the date and time, then press (A) to continue.
  3. Press (Home) to bring up the action menu
  4. Select “Scripts…”
  5. Select “NANDManager”
  6. Press X to select “Backup SysNAND”
  7. Press A
    • The NAND backup process may take up to 20 minutes.
  8. Press the A button
  9. Press Dpad Up to exit NANDManager
  10. Insert your SD card into your computer
  11. Copy the /gm9/backups/ folder to a safe location on your computer
    • This folder contains critical file backups and should be backed up to multiple locations (i.e. cloud storage) if possible
    • The two SysNAND files are your NAND backup and can be used to revert your console to a working state if it is bricked by a software issue
    • The essential.exefs file contains your console’s system-unique files and can be used to recover your data in the event of a hardware failure
  12. If you still have them, delete the two SysNAND files from the /gm9/backups/ folder from your SD card
    • The essential.exefs file is small and may be kept on your SD card for ease of access

Section VII: CtrNAND Luma3ds and GM9

  1. Insert your SD card into your console.
  2. Press Home to bring up the action menu
  3. Select “Scripts…”
  4. Select “GM9Megascript”
  5. Select “Scripts from Plailect’s Guide”
  6. Select “Setup Luma3DS to CTRNAND”
  7. When prompted, press A to proceed
  8. Press A to unlock SysNAND (lvl1) writing, then input the key combo given
  9. Press A to continue
  10. Exit the GM9Megascript by pressing B
  11. Select 0: SDCARD <Volume Label>
  • the volume label is specific to the sd card.
  1. Select the luma folder
  2. Select the payloads folder
  3. While hovering over godmode9.firm, press the Y button.
  4. Press the B button three times
  5. Select 1: SYSNAND CTRNAND
  6. Select the rw folder
  7. Select the luma folder
  8. Select Y and R to create a folder
  9. Name the folder “Payloads”, then enter it
  10. Press Y
  11. Select “Copy Paths”
  12. Press A to unlock SysNAND (lvl1) writing, then input the key combo given
  13. Power off your console

Success icon You’re done! Custom firmware is now fully configured on your console.
Info icon Information and Notes

Here are some key combos that you should know:

  • Holding Select on boot will launch the Luma3DS configuration menu.
  • Holding Start on boot will launch GodMode9, or if you have multiple payloads in /luma/payloads/, the Luma3DS chainloader.
  • By default, pressing L + + Select while in 3DS mode will open the Rosalina menu, where you can check system information, take screenshots, enable cheats, and more. This can be changed from the Rosalina menu.
    • If you have a modified Luma config, this key combination may be X + Y instead.
  • Holding Start + Select + X on boot will make the notification LED show a color for debug purposes. See here for what each color means.
