Dumping and Installing Wii U Discs
![]() |
Installing a game to the system memory (NAND) is not recommended as it’s limited to either 8GB or 32GB depending on your model, making you run out of space pretty quickly if you want to install multiple games. |
![]() |
If you do not have enough space on your SD Card, you can use an advanced technique to install dumps from a USB device. This is not the easiest thing to do and has the disadvantage of only being able to install the game onto your system memory (NAND). |
![]() |
In order to install to a USB device, it has to be formatted by the Wii U. Doing this will erase all contents of it, and prevent it from being used on another system unless you reformat it. To do this, plug your USB HDD into the Wii U, power on your Wii U, your Wii U will prompt you to format your HDD. Confirm with Yes. |
What you need
- Your SD Card needs to have enough space to fit the game you want to dump.
- If wanting to install to a USB, A USB HDD (+ a Y-cable if needed).
- The latest release of WUP Installer GX2 WUHB (Aroma).
- The latest release of WUP Installer GX2 (Tiramisu).
- The wudd homebrew application (wuhb for Aroma, rpx for Tiramisu).
Instructions
- Copy the contents of the
wup_installer_gx2_wuhb.zip
file to the root of your SD Card. - Copy the contents of the newly downloaded
wudd_x_ (wuhb) or (rpx).zip
file to the root of your SD Card. - Take the SD Card out of your PC and insert it into your Wii U.
- Power on your Wii U.
- Launch the Wii U Disc Dumper app from the home screen. (If you're using Tiramisu, Launch the Homebrew Launcher and load the WUDD app).
- Select
Dump partition as .app
. - Select the
Game
partition to start dumping. - When finished, exit wudd and navigate back to the Wii U Menu.
- Insert the SD Card into your computer.
- Copy the
GMXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
folder fromsd:/wudump/WUP-X-XXXX
to theinstall
folder on the root of your SD Card. (Create it if it doesn't exist). - Eject and insert the SD Card into your Wii U.
- Launch the WUP Installer GX2 app from your home screen. (If using Tiramisu, launch the Homebrew Launcher, then launch WUP Installer GX2).
- Select your game (
GMXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
), pressInstall
and confirm withYes
. - Choose
USB
to install to USB andNAND
to install to System Memory. - When the process is complete, press the HOME button to exit the app.
- When on the HOME Menu, you should see your game installed, ready to be played.
- Take the SD Card out of your Wii U and plug it into your PC.
- Delete the
GMXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
folder in the install directory on your SD Card to free up space.

Congrats! You have now dumped, and installed your game disc onto your console! |
Moving Games to USB
![]() |
If you don’t want to keep the game installed on NAND, you can use the Wii U’s data management to move the game to a USB device. |
![]() |
In order to move your game to a USB device, it has to be formatted by the Wii U. Doing this will erase all contents of it, and prevent it from being used on another system unless you reformat it. |
- Plug your USB device into the Wii U.
- Power on your Wii U.
- Your Wii U will prompt you to format your USB device. Confirm with Yes.
- Open the Wii U’s System Settings.
- Navigate to
Data Management > Copy/Move/Delete Data > System Memory > Move Items (X)
- Select the game and move all data (including updates and DLC if any are installed) to your USB device.
Moving Updates to USB
![]() |
If your disc game had DLC or updates installed, you will need to transfer the files over to your USB device. You can do this using the Wii U’s data management. |
- Power on your Wii U
- Open the Wii U’s System Settings.
- Navigate to
Data Management > Copy/Move/Delete Data > System Memory > Move Items (X).
- Select your game and move the update and DLC data to the USB device.
Dumping eShop games
In this section, we look at how to dump any games, updates and DLC from your Wii U system over to your PC.
To do this, we are going to run a dumping application through the Wii U browser to transfer your games and account information to a USB storage device or SD card.
If you are looking for a guide to set up Cemu, A Wii U emulator, check out this page.
What You Need
- A SD Card or USB HDD that needs to have enough space to fit the game you want to dump.
- An internet connection.
Preparations
- Put your SD card or USB into your console.
- Turn on your Wii U console.
- Boot into the NNID you want to dump your games from.
- If prompted, do not format any USB devices through the Wii U.
![]() |
If you coldboot Aroma or use Tiramisu, you are unable to dump to your SD card! Follow the instructions below to get around this. |
If you coldboot Aroma or use Tiramisu:
Temporarily bypass coldboot by holding R on boot. (not needed if you don't coldboot Aroma or Tiramisu).
When done correctly, the screen should fade directly from the Wii U logo to the "Loading Wii U Menu" screen and start the loading sound.
This is only temporary and coldboot will return on the next boot.
![]() |
If you use the Health and Safety application to load Aroma/Tiramisu, simply don't launch the Health and Safety when you boot your console. |
Instructions
- Launch the internet browser and open
https://dumplingapp.com/
- Tap
Launch Dumpling
- If your console freezes for more than 10 seconds, hold down the Power button for 4 seconds and reboot.
- Once rebooted, reset the browser's save and try again.
![]() |
If you use Aroma and it seems to load infinitely on a white screen with the Wii U logo on the bottom right with the loading sound playing, you likely didnt bypass coldboot. Follow the instructions above to learn how to bypass coldboot. |
