This guide will show how to clean up a 3DS with custom firmware and get a setup similar to a clean install.

Instructions
Section I - Check Luma3DS version
Press and hold Select while turning on the console to check the Luma3DS version.
| If your Luma3DS version is... | Then... |

| 10.2.1 and newer | You can update to 11.17.0 without problems. |
| 8.0 - 10.2 | You must first update following the Restoring / Updating CFW guide. Otherwise an error screen will appear. |
| 7.1 | boot9strap must be updated first, or newer versions of Luma3DS will not work. Follow the guide at Updating B9S. |
| 7.0.5 and older | Your console must first be upgraded from arm9loaderhax to boot9strap. Follow the guide at A9LH to B9S. |
Nothing happens or a different custom firmware is being used

Section II - Format SD card
Use the Formatting an SD card guide.
Section III - Format System Memory
Go to System Settings -> Other Settings -> Format System Memory.
Section IV - Restore Luma3DS
Follow Restoring / Updating CFW to restore Luma3DS to the SD card.
Section V - Finalizing Setup
Follow 3dsguide:finalizing-setup to re-install stock homebrew applications and make new backups of important files.
