Wii:Managing GCN Save Files

This tutorial will tell you how to backup, restore, import GCN memory cards with your Wii

Info icon Use of any GameCube peripheral with a Family Edition Wii or Wii mini require soldering on GameCube ports and/or memory card slots.

Requirements

  • A Wii with GameCube ports
  • An SD Card or USB drive
  • GCMM

Instructions

Downloading

  1. Extract GCMM and put it in your apps folder on your SD card or USB drive
  2. Place the .gci you downloaded in a folder named MCBACKUP on the root of your SD card
    • If you do not have the MCBACKUP folder, create it
    • The root of your SD Card should now look like this
    • Gnome-media-flash.svg (root)
      • Icons8 flat opened folder.svg apps
        • Icons8 flat opened folder.svg gcmm
          • Icons8 flat file.svg boot.dol
          • Icons8 flat file.svg icon.png
          • Icons8 flat file.svg meta.xml
      • Icons8 flat opened folder.svg MCBACKUP
        • Icons8 flat file.svg yoursave.gci
  3. Insert your SD card or USB drive into your Wii and launch GCMM from the Homebrew Channel.

Restoring

  1. Insert your memory card into Slot A or B
  2. Select the device you want to restore your saves from

  4. Press X on GameCube Controller, or + on Wiimote
  5. Gcmm-menu.jpg
  6. Select the save you want to restore, if you want to restore all your saves press R on GameCube controller, or 1 on Wiimote
  7. Gcmm-select-save.jpg
  8. When restoring is complete, press any button to continue.

Backing up

  1. Insert your memory card into Slot A or B
  2. Select the device you want to back up your saves to

  4. Press Y on GameCube Controller, or - on Wiimote

  6. Select the save you want to restore, if you want to restore all your saves press R on GameCube controller, or 1 on Wiimote

  8. When restoring is complete, press any button to continue.

Backing Up Your Physical Memory Card Into an Emulated Memory Card (.raw file)

  1. Insert your Memory Card into Slot A or B
  2. Select the device you want to restore your saves from

  4. Press L & Y on GameCube Controller at the same time, or B & - on Wiimote also at the same time to dump your memory card as a .raw

  6. When the dump is complete, press any button to continue. It should be inside the MCBACKUP folder on the root of your SD card.

Restoring an Emulated Memory Save to a Physical Memory Card

  1. If you are trying to restore a save from Dolphin, go to the File tab in Dolphin, select open user folder, open the GC folder, and find the .raw file.
  2. If you are restoring a Nintendont emulated memory card save, navigate to the saves folder on the root of your SD card or USB.
  3. Insert your Memory Card into Slot A or B
  4. Select the device you want to restore your saves from

  6. Press L & X on GameCube Controller at the same time, or B & + on Wiimote also at the same time to dump your memory card as a .raw

  8. When restoration is complete, press any button to continue. It should be inside the MCBACKUP folder on the root of your SD card.

Transferring Saves Between 2 Physical Memory Cards

Requirements
  • A Wii with GameCube ports
  • At least 2 memory cards
  1. Insert both memory cards into your Wii
  2. Press the 'Wii' icon on the bottom left, then navigate into Data Management -> Save Data -> Nintendo GameCube

  4. Find the save you want, select it and select Move or Copy.
