Jonbo: Fix table formatting

{{shortcut|3DS:ERRDISP}}
With Luma3DS installed, the 3DS error handler is modified to give significantly more information compared to [[3DS:Error screens/Nintendo error screen|the default error screens]]. These errors are also displayed by certain other applications such as [[3DS:FBI|FBI]].

This page lists various causes and solutions of Luma3DS ErrDisp errors.

==Reading a Luma3DS ErrDisp==

A Luma3DS ErrDisp error has several parts, but only two of them help in finding its cause. They are as follows:
[[File:Luma3DS ErrDisp.jpg|center]]
* '''Process name:''' The part of the system that is triggering the error. Can be helpful if the error code is generic.
* '''Error code:''' The specific reason the error occurred. This is almost always the most helpful part of the error.

==Known errors==

If your ErrDisp displays one of the processes in the first table, you do not need to look up its error code in the second one. The solutions for these processes are almost always the same.

----

{| class="wikitable" style="margin: auto"
! style="font-size:125%;" | Process Name
! style="font-size:125%;" | Problem & Solution
|-
| process: '''cam'''
process: '''qtm'''
| Your camera's hardware is damaged or dead.
:If the error code is
0xF96183FE
, you can open
sd:/luma/config.ini
and set the variable
enable_safe_firm_rosalina
to 1 to bypass this error.
:Otherwise, to fix, replace the camera with a new one. To avoid the error until then, or if you cannot get a new camera, disconnect the camera.
|-
| process: '''kernel'''
| Your system software is having a strange issue.
:To fix, diagnose further by reading the contents of the file
sd:/luma/errdisp.txt
. If you do not understand this file, join the [https://discord.gg/nintendohomebrew Nintendo Homebrew Discord] and explain your issue there.
|-
| process: '''mcu'''
| Some piece(s) of hardware related to power or the battery is damaged.
:First, check if your console's charging LED (the orange one) repeatedly turns on and off on its own while a cable is inserted. If it does, this is a sign of a faulty charger port, which may be contributing to the errors and should be fixed before any other troubleshooting.
:Once the charger port is verified intact, any other causes are likely deeper within the motherboard. Dissassembling and carefully analyzing the console will likely be necessary to find these issues, and even then, they may not be practical to fix.
|-
| process: '''nwm'''
| Your WiFi chipset's hardware is damaged or dead.
:To fix, replace the WiFi chipset with a new one. To avoid this error until then or if you cannot get a new chipset, disable WiFi on the 3DS and do not turn it back on.
:If your 3DS is an old model, you can disable WiFi with an external switch. New models must instead disable it through the HOME Menu Settings or Rosalina. Repeatedly pressing the keycombo for Rosalina while powering on may allow you to access Rosalina before it can crash.
|-
| 0xC86044D2
| Your NAND does not have enough free space available.
:To fix, join the [https://discord.gg/nintendohomebrew Nintendo Homebrew Discord] and explain your issue in detail. Deleting files from the NAND without guidance is likely to cause additional issues.
|-
| 0xC8804464
0xC8804471
0xC8804497
0xC88044A?
| Some dependency of the app you are trying to open does not exist.
:Ensure your SD is inserted, especially if the code is C88044AB specifically. If it is, ensure you have all of the necessary files for what you are trying to do.
:If you are specifically getting 0xc8804471 when opening an out-of-region game, it means it needs [[3DS:Setting Game Locales|locale emulation]] to function properly.
If you do have the files and it is happening to a digital title, [[3DS:Safe Mode|do a Safe Mode update.]]
If you do have the files and it is happening to a cartridge, either your 3DS or the cartridge likely has a hardware issue.
| 0xC8804478
| The app you tried to open or system software it relies on is missing.
:If this occurs when you open any DS game or DS Download Play, follow [[3DS:TWLFix|TWLFix]].
:If this occurs after doing a manual CTRTransfer, Lazarus3DS, or the nim module errors, check in GodMode9 whether the file path
1:/private/movable.sed
exists. If it does not, you will need to manually restore
movable.sed
from a backup. Join the [https://discord.gg/nintendohomebrew Nintendo Homebrew Discord] and ask for help with this.
|-
| 0xC8A04573
| Your SD card is formatted strangely.
:To fix, [[Formatting an SD card|reformat the SD card.]] If this does not work, [[Checking SD card integrity|test the SD card for errors.]]
|-
| 0xC8A0802B
| If this happened while installing an application, your
title.db
does not exist or is corrupted.
:To fix, follow one of the two following sets of instructions. The second one will delete all installed games/apps as a side effect, but is significantly faster and simpler.
:#[[3DS:Rebuild Title Database|rebuild
title.db
]] and then try again.
:#Open GodMode9, go into the file path
[A:] SYSNAND SD/dbs/
and delete any existing
title.db
, then press {{B|R}}+{{B|Y}}, choose '''Create a dummy file''', and name this file
title.db
- leave the file size at 0. Once the file is created, press {{B|START}} to reboot, go into System Settings -> Data Management -> Nintendo 3DS -> Software, and choose '''Yes''' if a prompt about management information appears.
|-
|0xC8A11BEF
|Occurs when attempting to use DLP services with an out-of-region game. This issue is not fixable currently.
|-
| 0xC92044EB
0xC92044FA
0xC960454?
| Your SD card is set to read-only or is faulty.
:To fix, make sure the slider on the left side of the SD card is pushed up, use a different SD adapter if you are currently using one, and [[Checking SD card integrity|test the SD for errors]] if it is not read-only.
:If the error still happens, the SD card is likely faulty. If it is also read-only, it has permanently protected itself to prevent data corruption. Either way, back up its contents and get a new SD.
If the error is happening when launching a cartridge, especially if the error code is 0xC960454?, delete any updates or DLC to see if the cartridge works as they could be corrupt or faulty. If this succeeds, reinstall them from eShop and ensure the cartridge still works.
|-
| 0xD860446?
| You are attempting to use more processing power than the console currently has available.
:To fix, ensure you are not using a mod that is designed for an emulator rather than native hardware. If you are using such a mod, either toggle off any "Extra RAM" setting or use a different mod.
|-
| 0xD8E0806A
| You have developer UNITINFO enabled and are trying to install a retail game.
:To fix, go into the file
sd:/luma/config.ini
and set the variable
use_dev_unitinfo
to 0.
|-
| 0xD900458?
| The app you tried to open, its savedata, or an update file for it is corrupted.
:To fix, if it is a [[3DS:Dump titles and game cartridges#Dumping a Game Cartridge|cartridge dump]], redump it. If it is an eShop game, click the Repair button at the bottom of its eShop page or delete and reinstall it. If it is a cartridge, clean the cartridge and the 3DS cartridge reader with isopropyl alcohol.
|-
| {{anchor|0xF9605002}}0xF9605002
| If attempting to use any camera features, your camera hardware is damaged or dead.
[https://github.com/zoogie/Bannerbomb3 Bannerbomb3] is an exploit targeting the DSiWare Management Menu, compatible with system versions 11.16 and lower for all regions excluding the iQue 3DS since it doesn't have that menu. The main developer is [https://github.com/zoogie zoogie]. It can be used to prepare the secondary exploits [https://github.com/zoogie/unSAFE_MODE unSAFE_MODE], [https://github.com/zoogie/menuhax67 menuhax67], and [https://github.com/zoogie/Fredtool Fredtool], all of which are also created by zoogie.

This page covers preparing menuhax67 to access the Homebrew Launcher as accessing the Homebrew Launcher from Bannerbomb3 directly is not possible. On the next page you will find out how to access the Homebrew Launcher with menuhax67. Note that with a crashing DSiWare Management Menu, this method won't work.

The instructions described here only work with EUR/USA/JPN/KOR. If you are on a CHN or TWN console, please use the [https://3ds.hacks.guide main guide] instead.
== CFW Check ==
First, we will make sure your console has working CFW. This will help as it allows access to several useful homebrew tools, including [[3DS:GodMode9|GodMode9]].

# Power on your console while holding the {{B|SELECT}} button
#* If your console boots to the [[3DS:Luma3DS/Configuration|Luma3DS configuration menu]], press {{B|START}} to save, then continue
#* If your console doesn't boot to the Luma3DS configuration menu, do the same without the SD card inserted
#** If your console does boot to the Luma3DS configuration menu, your SD card wasn't inserted correctly, re-insert it and try again
#** If your console doesn't boot to the Luma3DS configuration menu, you likely do not have Luma installed, and should [[3dsguide:index|install CFW before continuing]] as all but one of the fixes on this page require it
#*** To make sure of this, hold {{Key press|SELECT|START|X|POWER}} for seven seconds while the console is powered off, then power off again, hold {{B|HOME}}, and then press {{B|POWER}} - if the notification LED [[3DS:boot9strap#LED_Status_Codes|lit up a color]] or the [[3DS:fastboot3DS|fastboot3DS]] menu appears, then you have working CFW but something is interfering with Luma. Join the Nintendo Homebrew Discord for more advanced help
#*** If you do not have CFW and do not want to install it, you can still follow [[3DS:TWLFix|TWLFix]] if you can obtain homebrew access through [[3dsguide:index|a method on the guide]]
# Open the file
sd:/luma/config.ini
in a text editor
# Scroll down until you find the variable
disable_arm11_exception_handlers

#* This variable should be set to 0; if it is not, set it to 0 now
# Exit the text editor, remove the SD card, and reinsert the SD card into your console
# Power on your console
# Open [[3DS:FBI|'''FBI''']], then go into '''Remote Install''' -> '''Scan QR code'''
# Check whether the camera works, then press {{B|X}} and similarly check the other camera
#* If either camera causes an error or does not produce any output, your camera is likely bricked - this is known to cause DS mode issues. Disconnect the camera's cable ribbon and/or replace the camera entirely to fix this
#*
Enable custom upscaling filters for DSi

#*
Allow Left+Right / Up+Down combos for DSi

# Either press {{B|START}} or select
Save and exit
, then attempt to open something that uses DS mode
# The test will take up to 45 minutes - when it's done, press any button to turn it off
# The file
HWTEST.LOG
will have been created on the SD root - open this file in a text editor
#* '''GodMode9''' will work for this
# Scroll down to the end and look at the number of errors
#* If this number is more than 0, your console's RAM is dying and you need to replace the motherboard

If the above number of errors is zero, you have now exhausted all of the conventional fixes. Go to [https://discord.gg/C29hYvh the Nintendo Homebrew Discord], ask for help, and mention that you've tried this page already.
'''3DSBank''' is a 3DS homebrew application that functions as a folder selector. If you have reached the 300 titles limit on the 3DS, you can use this homebrew to temporary store the
Nintendo 3DS
folder into the bank, it also gives you the flexibility to create new folder/select which folder to use.

{{Info|text=Before using this, it is advised to backup your
Nintendo 3DS
folder to your PC.}}

{{Info|text=This homebrew runs in TWL/DSi mode to avoid potential issues while moving folder into the 3DSBank. It does not get around the 40 DSiWare title limit. If you would like to get around the 40 DSiWare limit, see YANBF.}}

==Installation==
Download it from Universal Updater, or copy the
.cia
to your sd card and install it with an application such as FBI.

==User Guide==
Have you hit the 300 title limit on your 3DS, and/or want more than 300 titles, but don't want to make an EmuNAND, or use another SD card?

The answer, is 3DSBank!

With this, you can store your
Nintendo 3DS
folder into a bank, and select/create another one to use (containing your other titles/themes/badges).

===How does it work?===
When starting 3DSBank, it renames the
Nintendo 3DS
folder, before showing a list of the 3DS folders, so that the list is complete, then, you can either select a different one, or exit the tool, so that the HOME Menu can create a new one.

The titles are stored in the
Nintendo 3DS
folder. When you select a different one in 3DSBank, you'll access the titles stored in that folder, so once you hit the 300 title limit, you can pick a different
Nintendo 3DS
folder to access other titles.

===Add custom names===
The custom names can be defined in 3DSBank/3DSBank.ini like so:

[3DSBANK]
SLOT_NAME_0 = Favorites
SLOT_NAME_1 = More Fav.
SLOT_NAME_2 = Homebrew Games

{{plainlist|
* {{B|Left}}/{{B|Right}} - Move
* {{B|A}} - Select folder and restart
* {{B|Home}}/{{B|Power}} - Create a new
Nintendo 3DS
folder

'''Seedminer''' is a process used to find a 3DS family system's
movable.sed
(the system-unique encryption key) and is used in the majority of CFW installation methods on the latest firmware. At present, there are three main ways to derive
movable.sed
: the automated '''BFM (Bruteforce Movable)''' service, '''manual mining''', and '''Mii mining'''.

If you're interested, a presentation on Seedminer's technical aspects can be found [https://zoogie.github.io/web/34%E2%85%95c3 here].

== Requirements ==
{{info|If BFM is inaccessible or you encounter issues using the site, [[Get_support|join our Discord server]] and ask for help.}}
All systems that can access the HOME Menu and either add a friend or create Miis can use Seedminer, but which methods are available will depend on your system's ability to add friends and whether you can access BFM.
The potential outcomes are as follows:

<tabber>

|-|Can add friends=

If you can add friends, you should use [[3DS:Seedminer/BFM|Bruteforce Movable]] to automatically mine your movable.sed.

* If BFM is '''inaccessible''' (the website is down), check [[#Bruteforce_movable_connectivity_and_uptime|this section.]] for more information.
* If BFM says that you are '''locked out''', [[Get_support|join our Discord server]] for assistance.
* If BFM says that it '''could not process your request''', read [[#Consoles made in 2011|this section]] for more information.
* If BFM is up and you wish to try manual mining anyway, see [[/Manual_mining|here]].

|-|Can't add friends, but have a friend code=

{{info|Before attempting these methods, try another wireless connection or get closer to your router, as BFM is significantly easier to use than the manual methods.}}

{{warning|Manual mining methods require a reasonably powerful dedicated GPU on hand to be efficient. If you don't have a dedicated GPU (or are not good at using the command line), you should [[Get_support|join our Discord server]] for assistance.}}

If you have an already-hacked 3DS physically on hand, see [[/Manual_mining|here]] to dump your LFCS and mine it yourself. If not, you will need to follow [[/Mii_mining|Mii Mining]] instead.

|-|No friend code, Internet, or banned console=

{{warning|Manual mining methods require a reasonably powerful dedicated GPU on hand to be efficient. If you don't have a dedicated GPU (or are not good at using the command line), you should [[Get_support|join our Discord server]] for assistance.}}

See [[/Mii_mining|here]] to do an altered version of the manual process.

</tabber>

==How it works==

===Movable security characteristics===
The
movable.sed
file is a system-unique encryption key for the 3DS. It is supposed to have 128 bits of random encryption, which would be impossible to bruteforce with modern hardware. However, due to various flaws with Nintendo reusing code, the number of possible values is ~2^40 instead of 2^128, a decrease of 2^22 (''1 trillion trillion'', or 70%) from the expected value.

This is due to half of
movable.sed
being created from the LFCS (Local Friend Code Seed), a file which any hacked system that has the target 3DS as a friend can dump, and another quarter being mathematically related to the LFCS. These factors make it possible to derive the encryption key with modern consumer-level hardware.
If the system cannot add friends, a Mii QR code can be bruteforced to derive the same information that would be exchanged in a friend exchange. However, the smaller amount of data available for this method means that this takes a significant amount of extra time.

===Mining the movable===
If you can obtain the LFCS, needing to mine only ~30% of the potential 2^128 values makes it easy to bruteforce with almost any dedicated GPU - even older models such as an Nvidia GTX 760. Integrated graphics are not powerful enough and may take multiple hours.

If you cannot obtain the LFCS, Mii mining takes significantly longer (up to 2 hours, depending on GPU strength) since it must also bruteforce the full LFCS before it can bruteforce the random values. Attempting to use integrated graphics for this method may result in it taking upwards of a day.

Once created, the
movable.sed
created can be used to decrypt any system data on your SD card (such as digital game save data). Because a bruteforced
movable.sed
only contains the data necessary to decrypt system data (and not other data that is used to verify that it is valid), it is '''not recommended''' to inject a bruteforced movable into your NAND (though, it won't [[brick]] your system).

===Automation and optimization===

movable.sed
is within bruteforcing territory with modern dedicated graphics cards; with optimizations and volunteers, the process can be entirely automated with mining times of 5 minutes or less. [https://seedminer.hacks.guide Bruteforce Movable] is a working implementation of this, and is one of the current methods used above.

==How to mine for others on BFM==
If you want to volunteer some of your GPU power for mining others' movables, go to the [https://seedminer.hacks.guide/ Seedminer website] and read the "Mine for BruteforceMovable" header for instructions.

== Limitations ==

=== Consoles made in 2011 ===
If your console is a launch model Old 3DS (made in 2011), its
movable.sed
cannot be derived through Seedminer. Therefore, these consoles '''cannot use any Seedminer method'''.

Any system that has received a system transfer from a launch model will also be unminable, but will become minable again after a system format. If your console appears to be impossible to mine, either do a system format first or look into an alternate exploit path.

For alternate paths, [[3DS:Alternate Exploits/Preparing menuhax67 (kartdlphax)|kartdlphax]] and [[3dsguide:ntrboot|ntrboot]] are both viable options, but if you cannot do either of these without significant extra effort, you should see if you have the resources needed for [[3DS:Alternate_Exploits|one of these paths.]]
===BFM connectivity and uptime===
Although BFM is generally very stable, it requires your computer to be able to connect to either https://seedminer.hacks.guide or https://bfm.nintendohomebrew.com. If BFM is down, your connection is too unstable/slow, or an internet block is disabling access to both of these websites, then [[Get_support|join our Discord server]] for help.

'''fastboot3DS''' is a firmware loader for the Nintendo 3DS. It works like [[3DS:boot9strap|boot9strap]], but offers additional features such as:

* A menu that can be accessed by holding {{B|HOME}} on boot to perform certain actions
* The ability to chainload payloads directly from fastboot3DS (instead of through Luma3DS)
** Additionally, fastboot3DS's chainloader can make a payload boot only when holding ''multiple'' buttons
** Also note that fastboot3DS's chainloader acts before Luma3DS, so {{B|L}}, {{B|R}}, and {{B|START}} can be used by themselves without consequence. {{B|SELECT}} should only be used with other buttons to avoid making the [[3DS:Luma3DS/Configuration|Luma3DS configuration]] menu inaccessible, however, and {{B|ZL}}, {{B|ZR}} and {{B|HOME}} are still unusable
* The ability to display a splash screen on startup, before Luma3DS has booted
* The ability to backup / restore your NAND, as well as backup your bootroms and otp.bin
** The latter can no longer be done with boot9strap as of boot9strap v1.4, but can still be done through GodMode9
* Compatibility with HOME Menu FIRM payload shortcuts, such as [https://gbatemp.net/download/open-agb-launcher.36828/ Open AGB Launcher] for [[3DS:open_agb_firm|open_agb_firm]] and its base program, {{GitHub|SUOlivia/That-Shortcut-Thingy|That_Shortcut_Thingy}}

[[3dsguide:index|Our guide]] installs boot9strap since it's what most end users will be fine with, but if you're a power user, then you may be interested in installing fastboot3DS.

{{warning|While the installation of fastboot3DS is a generally safe process (equally safe as installing boot9strap), there is still a chance that something goes catastrophically wrong. Installing fastboot3DS (just like boot9strap) involves writing to the 3DS's FIRM partitions, so if something goes wrong, you may need ntrboot to fix it.}}

{{info|Two things you should know:
* Troubleshooting may differ for some situations (generally for things relating to FIRM-based payloads) when fastboot3DS is installed, so you should disclose that when getting help with such a situation.
* The vast majority of pages on this wiki, and in fact most guides on the internet, will assume that you're using a boot9strap-based installation. If you choose to install fastboot3DS, you'll need to adapt the wiki's instructions to your personal setup (and/or figure it out on your own). This usually will not cause noticeable changes unless
.firm
payloads are involved.}}

# Remove your SD card and put it back into your 3DS

=== Section II - OpenFirmInstaller ===

# Hold {{B|Start}}, then power on your device while still holding {{B|Start}} to enter the Luma3DS chainloader
# Navigate to "OpenFirmInstaller" in the list, then press {{B|A}}
# Follow the on-screen prompts to install fastboot3DS

== Usage ==
The most common guides are listed at [[3DS:Fastboot3DS/Usage|fastboot3DS usage]].

== Configuration ==
All of fastboot3DS' config is in the on-boot menu, in the
Boot setup...
section. The options are as follows:
* '''Setup [slot X]''': For any slot '''X''', allows you to configure what and where the boot slot boots. There are six slots, and they will be tried in ascending order - keycombo slots will always be tried before autoboot slots if any keys are held during boot.
**'''Select [slot X] firm''': When chosen, lets you pick a
.firm
file from anywhere on SD or NAND to boot in this slot.
**'''Set [slot X] keycombo''': When enabled, this FIRM will boot when the configured keycombo is held. To configure it, hold the keys you want to use for 3 seconds.
**'''Set [slot X] autoboot''': When enabled, this FIRM will boot automatically once all previous autoboot slots fail.
**'''Disable [slot X]''': When enabled, this slot will not boot anything even if all other slots fail.
*'''Change boot mode''': Alters how the fastboot3DS on-boot menu is handled.
**'''Set normal boot''': When enabled, always plays the selected splash and opens to the fastboot3DS menu when booting.
**'''Set quick boot''': When enabled, always plays the selected splash and continues to the first slot available. Holding HOME opens the fastboot3DS menu instead.
**'''Set quiet boot''': When enabled, always ignores the splash and continues to the first slot available. Holding HOME opens the fastboot3DS menu instead.
*'''Change splash''': Lets you choose what and when the on-boot splash is.
**'''Use custom splash...''': When enabled, lets you pick a
.bin
image file from anywhere on SD or NAND to use as a splash.
**'''Use default splash''': When enabled, uses the default splash without any file option.
**'''Set splash duration...''': When chosen, lets you modify the splash duration using {{B|D-Pad Left}} and {{B|D-Pad Right}} in 250ms increments.
*'''Enable FCRAM Boot''': When enabled, allows for HOME Menu payload shortcuts through {{GitHub|SUOlivia/That_Shortcut_Thingy|That_Shortcut_Thingy}}

{{shortcut|HGW:TTD}}{{TOC right}}This is where we can keep a list of things that should be done, such as pages that need creating or adding to.
{{ombox|text=For organizational purposes, please mark items based on their status (and link them if applicable):

== Pages ==

=== Organization ===

Once this wiki has "enough content" (whatever that means), before we can start advertising it publicly, we need better page organzation.

* Index/contents pages? Generally anything someone might want or need to do with hacks. Save backup and restore, transfers, troubleshooting, informational pages, etc. Similar to [[3DS:Things to do]] but that one is more like "here's a list of cool things you can do".

=== Main Page ===

A nice [[Main Page]] should be made. It should include a simple explanation of what homebrew is, then links to the main guides, the "Things to do" pages, and maybe troubleshooting.

A search box could be put here too.

<nowiki>
<inputbox>
type=search
placeholder=Placeholder text here...
width=70
</inputbox>
</nowiki>

=== Console introductions ===

These pages should be like an all-around intro to things about hacking a console. Links to guides on getting hacks set up, links to the "things to do", maybe troubleshooting for when things go wrong...

I'm not sure how necessary these pages are though, if there isn't enough stuff that can't also go on the "Things to do" pages. [[User:Ihaveahax|ihaveahax]] ([[User talk:Ihaveahax|talk]]) 02:52, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
: In my opinion they should be the main hub for everything related to the console itself with quick and easy access/links to the most important articles and console related help pages. Could also include highlights from the "things to do" page or apps '''-[[User:zsotroav|zsotroav]]''' ''([[User_talk:zsotroav|Cantact me here!]])'' @ 18:34, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

* [[Nintendo 3DS]]
* [[Wii U]]
* [[Nintendo Switch]]

=== "Things to do" pages ===
A simple page that someone new to homebrew/cfw can use to start doing something with their newly-hacked console.
* [[Wii U:Things to do]]
* [[Wii:Things to do]]

=== Game pages ===

I think we should have pages for individual games with lists of mods, save editors, guides, and maybe other things.

I just picked a random assortment of some popular games. Any game with a mod, save editor, useful hacking guide, etc. can have its own page!
* [[Wii U:Mario Kart 8]]
=== Move from pins in NH channels ===
Some stuff that's currently in {{gh|nh-server/Kurisu}} could also be put here. Look inside {{gh|nh-server/Kurisu/tree/main/cogs/assistance-cmds|assistance-cmds}}. Ideas for new pages. Some of these pages already have established guides, which can be used as a reference (but may not be copied directly, depending on permission, and some of them may be out of date anyway)
I think it might be of some use to add a "piracy" page, explaining what piracy is, how to determine if you are a pirate, and why we don't allow piracy talk, sorta like https://3ds.eiphax.tech/piracy, but with some more detail on how it applies to the wiki and Discord server in specific.
*Create lots of redirect pages. Someone will probably search things like "Pokemon x" or "Fix black screen" so we should create those pages that point to the right place. This needs some automation too.
* Create a game template page, so anyone who wants to make a page for a specific game knows where to start.
** [[Hacks Guide Wiki:Game pages/Template]] (maybe even make it a preload-able template?)
* A manual of style for guides, information pages, game pages (though that one already kinda exists).
3DS:Installing software

{{shortcut|3DS:IS}}

This page details how installing software/homebrew works on the 3DS.

==3DS software formats (CIA, 3DSX, etc.) ==
Software on the 3DS comes in two main formats: '''CIA''' and '''3DSX'''.

*'''CIA'''
.cia
format software is usually installed with [[3DS:FBI|FBI]]/[[3DS:GodMode9|GodMode9]] and will end up on HOME Menu as a launchable title. Both homebrew and retail game dumps are available in the '''CIA''' format.
*'''3DSX'''
.3dsx
format software is installed by placing the 3DSX file in the
3ds
folder (NOT Nintendo 3DS) and can only be launched from Homebrew Launcher. All '''3DSX''' format software is homebrew.

No format is inherently better than the other; it just depends on how you want to launch your software. If you'd prefer your application on HOME Menu, '''CIA''' format is the way to go. Otherwise, '''3DSX''' is probably better.

There is also '''NDS'''
.nds
format software, which can only be used with [https://wiki.ds-homebrew.com/twilightmenu/installing-3ds TWiLightMenu++]/nds-bootstrap and can be launched by placing the
.nds
file anywhere on the SD card visible to TWiLightMenu++. This format of homebrew is also compatible with the DSi and with DS flashcarts. Alternatively, you can create a forwarder that points to the
.nds
file on your SD card, which will show up on your HOME Menu. For instructions, see [https://wiki.ds-homebrew.com/ds-index/forwarders here].

{{Warning|text=The 3DS HOME Menu has a limit of 300 3DS titles and 40 DSiWare titles. The '''3DS''' title limit can be bypassed with [[3DS:3DSBank|3DSBank]]. The '''DSiWare''' limit itself cannot be bypassed, but if you are primarily installing
.nds
forwarders, you can use [https://github.com/YANBForwarder/YANBF YANBF] to make use of the 3DS title limit.|}}

Some other file formats you might encounter (but not as often):

*'''3DS'''
.3ds
is used for cartridge dumps, which you can make/install using [[3DS:Dump titles and game cartridges|GodMode9]]. This file format is also often used with [https://citra-emu.org/wiki/dumping-game-cartridges/ Citra].
*'''CXI'''
.cxi
is a generic executable format sometimes used for digital file dumps / preservation.
*'''APP'''
.app
is the packed application format that you will see in the
Nintendo 3DS
folder. You won't be able to directly manipulate these very easily.

In summary, if you want to install software on your 3DS, you should be looking for '''CIA''' or '''3DSX''' format applications — and sometimes '''NDS''' files.

==Installing .cia files==

There are 3 applications that are typically used to install 3DS software and homebrew:
<tabber>

|-|FBI=

'''FBI''' is an application that can install '''CIA''' files. To use it:

Place your
.cia
file anywhere on your SD card. (You may want to create a
cias
folder for organizational purposes.)

Open the FBI application (if you followed 3ds.hacks.guide, it will be on your HOME Menu)

Navigate to SD Card -> (wherever you put the
.cia
file)

Navigate to
Install and delete CIA

The '''CIA''' file itself does not need to be kept after it is installed, hence "Install and delete"

Wait for the '''CIA''' to install

Once the install has finished, close FBI and the application should appear as a gift box to open on your HOME Menu. If it doesn't immediately appear, you may have to power your console off and on to get it to appear.

|-|GodMode9=

'''GodMode9''' is an application that can install '''CIA''' files. To use it:

Place your
.cia
file anywhere on your SD card. (You may want to create a
cias
folder for organizational purposes.)

Power on your 3DS while holding {{B|Start}}

Navigate to
[0:] SDCARD
and press {{B|A}}

Navigate to the location of the
.cia
file you want to install, then press {{B|A}}

Navigate to
CIA Image Options...
and press {{B|A}}

Navigate to
Install game image
and press {{B|A}}

Unlock write permissions if prompted

Wait for the CIA to install

Press {{B|A}} when
Install success
appears

Relock write permissions if prompted

Once the install has finished, reboot your console by pressing {{B|Start}}

|-|Universal Updater=

If you followed 3ds.hacks.guide to install custom firmware on your 3DS, you probably also have '''Universal Updater''', which can be used as a homebrew app store. To use it:

Open the Universal Updater application (the blue down arrow icon)

Use the
D-Pad
to navigate between applications and the {{B|A}} button to select an application

Use the
Search
or
Filter
function (the magnifying glass) to look for a specific application

Under
Available Downloads
, select either the
.cia
,
.3dsx
, or
.nds
file, then press {{B|A}} again to install the application

Check the queue (the button with the number in it) to see download progress

'''CIA''' files will appear on your HOME Menu in a gift box after you exit Universal-Updater

'''3DSX''' files will become available in the Homebrew Launcher application

'''NDS''' files will need to be launched from [https://wiki.ds-homebrew.com/twilightmenu/installing-3ds.html TWiLightMenu++]

{{shortcut|3DS:IS}}

This page details how installing software/homebrew works on the 3DS.

==3DS software formats (CIA, 3DSX, etc.) ==

The '''DSiWare''' limit itself cannot be bypassed, but if you are primarily installing
.nds
forwarders, you can use [https://github.com/YANBForwarder/YANBF| YANBF] to make use of the 3DS title limit.|}}

==Installing .cia files==

There are 3 applications that are typically used to install 3DS software and homebrew:
<tabber>

Power on your 3DS while holding {{B|Start}}

Navigate to
[0:] SDCARD
and press {{B|A}}

Navigate to the location of the
.cia
file you want to install, then press {{B|A}}

Navigate to
CIA Image Options...
and press {{B|A}}

Navigate to
Install game image
and press {{B|A}}

Unlock write permissions if prompted

Wait for the CIA to install

Press {{B|A}} when
Install success
appears

Relock write permissions if prompted

Once the install has finished, reboot your console by pressing {{B|Start}}

Once the install has finished, press {{B|Start}} to exit the application, if you installed a '''CIA''' file and it doesn't immediately appear, you may have to power your console off and on to get it to appear.

</tabber>

==Running .3dsx files==
To run a piece of homebrew in
.3dsx
format:

# Place your
.3dsx
file in the
3ds
folder (NOT
Nintendo 3DS
) on your SD card
#*Some pieces of homebrew may require additional support files. You may have to consult the README / documentation of that software if this is the case
#The homebrew should now appear in the list of homebrew that appears when you open the Homebrew Launcher (the blue "h" icon) on your HOME Menu
#*Navigate between homebrew applications / folders using the D-Pad and press the {{B|A}} button to launch it
