== What is copyright infringement? ==
As a broad phrase, copyright infringement relates to actions which 'infringe' on, or violate, a 'copyright' held by another party, usually a corporation or company in this context. The most common form of copyright infringement in the gaming community is [[w:Online_piracy|software piracy]], which is where a user downloads software from somewhere other than the copyright holder's authorized distribution channels, and most commonly without payment to the copyright holder (or their delegate).

== What is piracy? ==
Piracy in the context of the gaming community is commonly defined as 'downloading paid software for free', however realistically it includes any software that is copyrighted - acquiring updates and previously free software from unofficial sources is also considered piracy.

== Why does it matter? ==

Copyright infringement (whether infringement of paid software or free software) is against the law in most jurisdictions, including the United States. As a significant amount of online services (not least of all, Discord) are based or hosted in the United States, they are obligated to follow United States laws.

Due largely to the concept of 'lost profits', copyright holders have (in many cases successfully) lobbied relevant governments and powers to make it illegal, or at least frowned upon, to install homebrew/CFW. Continued copyright infringement legitimizes their efforts, de-legitimizes the homebrew community at large, and makes it more difficult all around for both developers and users in the homebrew community.

Not really, no. Most communities have rules against piracy, discussing piracy or assisting with piracy primarily to ensure compliance with laws, regulations and Terms of Service.
However, be aware that for every 'it's just me downloading one game, how much does it matter?' there are another 100 users just like you thinking the same thing.

:so, i reviewed some internal archives. lemme sum this up for ya.
:it has to do with a combination of [https://www.3dbrew.org/wiki/Extdata#Shared_Extdata_0xf000000b_gamecoin.dat gamecoin.dat] and pedometer.dat. once the console catches that playcoin/pedometer data is massively out of date after rtc is updated, it starts checking the logs for every single date between the old and new rtc to find step counts and apply any additional playcoins the step counts create along the way. if there's a large time gap to cover, checking all that data one-by-one (even if most of it doesn't actually exist) takes a while. By not deleting my account upon request, this website is in violation of Europes GDPR laws and will be reported if I do not have my account deleted within the next 24 hours, this website is already in violation by not allowing users to delete their accounts already.

I mean I'm sure we can do it. but if you're trying to take the nuclear option and remove all your contributions, I believe they're already licensed as cc-by-SA, regardless of your account status, so... -eip
