The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid handheld/home game console released by Nintendo in 2017.

Multiple revisions of the Switch have been released - out of them, only the original "Erista" models made before July 2018 are currently hackable. Other patched Erista models may use the software method "Caffeine" if they run on versions 4.0.0 to 4.1.0.
{| style="width: 100%; table-layout: fixed;"
| style="vertical-align: top;" class="collapse-on-mobile" |
Getting started
The current recommended setup is Hekate + Atmosphère.

Instructions on setting up homebrew and custom firmware on your console can be found here:
| style="vertical-align: top;" class="collapse-on-mobile" |
Use homebrew
|-
|
Models
The current released models of the switch are:

* "Erista" (original switch)
** "Erista" systems manufactured before June 2018 are vulnerable to the Fusee Gelee exploit, and are generally refered to as "unpatched"
** "Erista" systems manufactured after June 2018 cannot be hacked via software at this time (unless they run on versions 4.0.0-4.1.0 with the method Caffeine)
* "Mariko" ("redbox" switch)
** "Mariko" systems feature a new SOC, which allows them to run cooler, and have a longer battery life
** "Mariko" systems cannot be hacked via software at this time
* Switch Lite
** The Switch Lite is a budget model, without TV output, detachable joycons, and with several features removed.
** The Switch Lite cannot be hacked via software at this time
* OLED model ("Aula")
** The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) is identical to the "Mariko" systems, but features a larger, OLED display, expanded internal storage, an improved kickstand and improved speakers
** The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) cannot be hacked via software at this time
Follow the NH Switch Guide to get setup with Hekate and Switch:Atmosphere.

Alternatively, if you're moving from fusee (for example), see the below instructions to setup Hekate:

#Power off your Nintendo Switch
#Insert the microSD card into your computer
#Download the latest release of Hekate. it should be named
hekate_ctcaer_x.x.x_Nyx_x.x.x.zip

#Open the archive and extract the
/bootloader
folder to the root of your microSD card, overwriting if asked. Then copy the
hekate_ctcaer_x.x.x.bin
to your computer
#Eject your microSD card from your computer and reinsert it into your Nintendo Switch
If applicable, Hekate will automatically update the reboot payload on your RCM injection dongle or modchip when you boot it for the first time after updating.

Booting Hekate
Via RCM:
#Put your Nintendo Switch into RCM using your preferred method
#Push the
hekate_ctcaer_x.x.x.bin
payload using your payload launcher of choice
Via Picofly modchip:

#Rename
hekate_ctcaer_x.x.x.bin
to
payload.bin

#Place
payload.bin
on the root of your Switch console's microSD card
#Boot the Nintendo Switch normally

This page answers frequently asked questions about the discontinuation of online services for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U on 2024, and its relation to homebrew.

eShop funds can no longer be merged with a Nintendo Account. The deadline for merging funds was March 11th, 2024.

Read the official announcement on Nintendo Support.

What specifically will be ending?
These services will be discontinued:

* Online play for all software that uses Nintendo Network
* Nintendo Badge Arcade
* SpotPass

These services will continue working past the shutdown date:

* Nintendo eShop (for downloading game updates and past purchases)
** System Transfer will also continue to work
* Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter - however it is recommended to transfer to Pokemon HOME as soon as possible as it is hinted at that it won't be up for very long.

Will homebrew let me continue to play online?
The official servers will be going down permanently for everyone, homebrew will not grant you access to them. Instead, an alternate network, Pretendo Network, is in development.

Can I use Pretendo Network without hacking?
No, homebrew is required to play on Pretendo Network or any unofficial servers.

Will Pretendo Network work on Tiramisu?
No, Pretendo has ended support for Tiramisu. You will need to use the Aroma environment to install it.

Is there something I can do to help Pretendo Network?
Pretendo needs network dumps for games, so that it can recreate the servers. You can capture network dumps using your 3DS or Wii U. https://pretendo.network/docs/network-dumps

Can I still set up homebrew after the shutdown?
Yes, but certain exploits that depend on online services may not be available, such as Seedminer, which requires use of the Friend List. No Wii U exploits are affected by this.

What happens to the eShop?
Nintendo eShop is likely to stay available for downloading game updates and past purchases for a long time. Similarly, the Wii Shop Channel and DSi Shop are still online to download purchases many years later.

What about System Transfer?
The System Transfer feature will continue to work for the foreseeable future.

Will I still be able to update?
Just like the eShop, update servers are most likely going to be still accessible after the shutdown. Consoles like the Wii are still able to be updated. It is still recommended to update if CFW is installed on the console.

What about Pokémon Bank?
Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter will still work after the shutdown, but it is recommended to transfer to Pokémon HOME as early as possible, as it may not stay available for long.
exFAT on Switch
For all versions after 1.0.0, the Switch has been able to support exFAT microSD cards through the use of an update provided by Nintendo. If an exFAT microSD card is inserted without the exFAT update installed, the Switch will display the system update prompt, even if the Switch is on the latest firmware version.

Reasons not to use exFAT
Despite the 4GiB file size limitation of FAT32, exFAT is not recommended for multiple reasons:

* Attempting to boot CFW using an exFAT formatted SD card without the exFAT update installed will fail.
* The exFAT driver used by the Switch operating system is prone to causing corruption.
* Even with large games and exFAT, Nintendo doesn't use files larger than 4GiB.
Out of the box, SDXC cards (64GB+) are formatted to exFAT. However, you can format any SD card to FAT32 just fine. See Formatting an SD card.
Browser errors
FSGetMountSource failed: Please insert a FAT32 SD Card:
No SD Card detected. Re-insert the SD and try again. This could also mean that the SD card is locked (Slider is down instead of up) or the SD card label is "wiiu" (casing does not matter), which is stated in the guide causes conflict. If it's not any of these issues, try blowing into the slot (not recommended) or use compressed air. Pins may be dusty inside.

FSOpenFile failed [...] payload.elf:
Missing payload file on SD. Make sure you have payload.elf in the wiiu folder, and the wiiu folder on the root of the SD card.

FSOpenFile failed/-11 after launching Mii Maker:
Missing the Homebrew Launcher on the SD card. Make sure you have
homebrew_launcher.elf
in the
sd:/wiiu/apps/homebrew_launcher
folder.

SD Mount Failed:
The console recognizes the SD card but could not mount it. Make sure it is formatted properly. Also, your SD card is more compatible with reputable brands (i.e. SanDisk, Samsung, Lexar, etc.) and less likely to have issues.

PayloadLoader Errors
Failed to load SD:/wiiu/payload.elf. Starting the console without any modifications:
PayloadLoader could not find the payload or it doesn't detect your SD card. Reinsert it properly or try cleaning the slot. If the issue persists, try getting fresh files from the Tiramisu or Aroma site, depending on which you use.

EnvironmentLoader Errors
Don't run the EnvironmentLoader twice:
Happens when you run Health and Safety or through the exploit a second time. The Environment Loader can only be ran one time per boot. If you autoboot into an environment, you do not need to run Health and Safety. To change environments, hold X on boot (or Start for changing boot titles in the boot selector). If you've launched the Environment Loader already, you must reboot to use it again.

FAQ
Data Management asks to delete unnecessary data, what does it mean?
This refers to leftover files from incomplete installs. Always choose Yes to delete this data, as it takes up space for no good reason. If it ever stays stuck on deleting the data in an infinite loop, you can manually delete the data yourself.
Use FTPiiU Everywhere or the FTPiiU Plugin and browse to
/storage_mlc/usr/import
then delete any files in the folder if any exists. This is where the partial installs exist after incomplete installs. It'll be
/storage_usb/usr/import
if installed to a USB.
The import folder should always be kept empty.

My HDD doesn't work or makes a weird clicking sound, what should I do?
The reason behind that is that the Wii U doesn't give enough power through one USB port to use the Hard Drive.

You can fix this by either using a powered HDD or using a Y-Cable to connect the HDD to two USB ports.

If your HDD worked for some time and then stopped working for some games/all games, it is the same issue and can be fixed with the same methods.

=== When extracting some of the files there are duplicates of certain ones called
info.json
&
manifest.install
, what do I do with those? ===
Nothing special, you can leave them there, delete them or replace them with new ones. Those files are not used in the process, therefore, won't have any impact by being or not being there.

My console suddenly lost online connectivity and I have an HDD sitting on top of the console, what should I do?
The internal antenna may have been influenced by the hard drive magnet.
You can move the HDD to a different position atop the Wii U, or move it off the Wii U entirely.

Guide says to extract the contents to the root, but where is the root?
I put the extracted zip onto the root and the exploit won't work.
If you have
environmentloader-28332a7+wiiu-nanddumper-payload-5c5ec09+fw_img_loader-c2da326
as a folder on the root, you have extracted it wrong. You have to extract the
wiiu
folder out of that folder to the root. That folder doesn't even belong on the SD card. Contents of the zip = wiiu folder.

Running into Issues with homebrew? This page will show you how to troubleshoot errors during the exploit and when using apps.

Browser errors
* FSGetMountSource failed: No SD Card detected. Re-insert the SD and try again. This could also mean that the SD card is locked (Slider is down instead of up) or the SD card label is "WIIU", which is stated in the guide causes conflict. If it's not any of these issues, try blowing into the slot(not recommended) or use compressed air. Pins may be dusty inside.

* FSOpenFile failed [...] payload.elf: Missing payload file on SD. Make sure you have payload.elf in the wiiu folder, amd the wiiu folder on the root of the SD card.

*FSOpenFile failed/-11 after launching Mii Maker: Missing homebrew_launcher on SD. Make sure you have homebrew_launcher.elf in the /wiiu/apps/homebrew_launcher folder.

*SD Mount Failed: The console recognizes the SD card but could not mount it. Make sure it is formatted properly. Also, your SD card is more compatible with reputable brands (i.e. SanDisk, Samsung, Lexar, etc.) and less likely to have issues.

PayloadLoader Errors
* Failed to load SD:/wiiu/payload.elf. Starting console without any modifications: PayloadLoader could not find the payload or it doesn't detect your SD card. Reinsert it properly or try cleaning the slot. If the issue persists, try getting fresh files from the Tiramisu or Aroma site, depending on which you use.

Environment Loader Errors
*Don't run the EnvironmentLoader twice: Happens when you run Health and Safety or through the exploit a second time.

Use FTPiiU Everywhere and browse to /storage_mlc/usr/import then delete any files in the folder if any exists. This is where the partial installs exist after incomplete installs. It'll be /storage_usb/usr/import if installed to a USB.

When extracting some of the files there are duplicates of certain ones called "info.json" & "manifest.install", what do I do with those?

Nothing special, you can leave them there, delete them or replace them with new ones. Those files are not used in the process, therefore, won't have any impact by being or not being there.

My console suddenly lost online connectivity and I have an HDD sitting on top of the console, what should I do?

The internal antenna may have been influenced by the hard drive magnet.
You can move the HDD to a different position atop the Wii U, or move it off the Wii U entirely.

Guide says to extract contents to the root, what and where is the root?

I put the extracted zip onto the root and the exploit won't work.

If you have
environmentloader-28332a7+wiiu-nanddumper-payload-5c5ec09+fw_img_loader-c2da326
as a folder, you have extracted it wrong.
This guide will help you fix your Nintendo Wii getting "the System Files are corrupted." or a black screen after installing a WAD.

Uninstallation
What you need
* An SD card or USB drive
* If you do not have Priiloader installed: A PC with Linux installed, or a Raspberry Pi since it most likely has Linux installed already
* YAWM ModMii Edition

Section I - Entering HBC (Priiloader)
If you are on Wii, you can enter Priiloader in this state by holding RESET on the console while turning it on.
* If you do not have Priiloader, you can skip to
Section I - Entering HBC - Wii (no Priiloader)

If you are on Wii U in the Aroma environment, you can load the Wii U forwarder on your Wii U Menu.
* If you do not have Priiloader, and are using a Wii U follow
Section I - Entering HBC - vWii (no Priiloader)

* If you have not yet installed Aroma, here is a guide to do so.

* If you don't have the Priiloader Wii U Forwarder, you can get it here.

1. After doing the method for your console to enter Priiloader, you should be on a screen like the image below.

Section I - Entering HBC - Wii (No Priiloader)
# Follow this guide until step 13, then come back here. Ensure you do not press A on the Health and Safety screen.
# Once you are in the HackMii installer, exit it, you should now be in the HBC, continue to Section II

Section I - Entering HBC - vWii (No Priiloader)
# Aroma: Download this Boot2vWii forwarder
* Tiramisu: Download hbl2hbc (just the
.elf
file)
# Place it in
wiiu/apps

# Open it and you should be taken to the HBC, once it does, continue to Section II

Section II - Uninstalling WADs
# Select YAWM ModMii Edition (yawmME for short) from the list of homebrew.
# Select your source device.
# Press (A), then press (A) again on your wad.
# Press D-PAD RIGHT to change the selected action from Install WAD to Uninstall WAD, then press (A).

* If you've installed multiple WADs, do this for every WAD you installed.

5. Once it's uninstalled, Press (A) to go back, then press HOME to return to HBC. In HBC, press HOME again, and then "Return to System Menu".
