{{hatnote|1=This article is about Rosalina, accessible when booted into the HOME Menu. For information about the Luma3DS configuration menu (accessible by holding SELECT on boot), see [[3DS:Luma3DS/Configuration|this page]].}}

Rosalina is a system module for Luma3DS that can be accessed while your 3DS is powered on and in 3DS mode by pressing a keycombo specified in the file <code>sd:/luma/config.ini</code>. By default, the keycombo is {{B|L|Down|SELECT}}.

Rosalina is ''not'' accessible from within payloads (such as GodMode9), from DS/DSi mode (such as when using a DS cartridge or when using TWiLightMenu++), or from GBA mode (such as when using GBA virtual console).

This menu offers many options for real-time configuration of the system, including but not limited to the following:
*Take screenshots
*Change system settings such as brightness, active cheats, wireless status, and (on New 3DS/2DS only) clock speed & L2 cache
*Activate a blue light filter

[[3dsguide:index|Our custom firmware installation guide]] uses the Rosalina menu for multiple functions. This page will contain explanations for all the options and information present in the Rosalina menu to enable easier navigation and usage.

==Opening and navigating the Rosalina Menu==
{{info|If your {{B|L}}, {{B|Down}}, or {{B|SELECT}} keys are broken, you will not be able to open the Rosalina menu by default. To fix this, modify the <code>sd:/luma/config.ini</code> file by editing the variable <code>rosalina_menu_combo</code> to two or more keys that work for you, such as {{B|X|Y}}. If you do not see the <code>config.ini</code>, [[3dsguide:checking-for-cfw|update Luma3DS to version 11.0 or newer]].}}

You can access Rosalina by pressing your chosen keycombo while in most areas of the system, excluding the following:
*Safe Mode (can be bypassed, read [[3DS:Luma3DS/Configuration|Luma3DS Configuration]] for more details)
*DS and GBA games, and homebrew that enters these modes ([[3DS:DS games#TwilightMenu++|TWiLightMenu++]] being a notable example)

Once in the Rosalina menu, use {{B|Up}} and {{B|Down}} to navigate the options. Press {{B|A}} to choose/enable/disable an option or view a submenu. Once in a submenu, press {{B|B}} to return to the main menu. The currently highlighted option is denoted by a <code>></code> to the left of its text - the option highlighted when you first open the menu is <code>Take screenshot</code>.

While the Rosalina menu is launched, whatever is actively will pause until you exit the Rosalina menu. If you are playing a game online, this will cause your session to disconnect.

Once you are done changing options, press {{B|B}} until you exit Rosalina and return to the system, unpausing what is currently running.

==Rosalina Options==

===Take Screenshot===
Takes a screenshot of both screens' content and saves it to <code>sd:/luma/screenshots</code> as two <code>.bmp</code> files. Activates immediately after being pressed.

===Screen filters...===
Allows you to enable a blue-light filter with settings at certain degrees Kelvin, the default setting being 6500K and the range being from 1200K-10000K - if edited through <code>Advanced configuration...</code> instead, the range is 1000K-25100K. The <code>Enhance (top/bottom) screen colors</code> option edits the screens color curve for IPS displays to be more in-line with normal sRGB displays. The <code>Advanced configuration...</code> option also allows you to edit other values; gamma range 0.00-8.00, contrast range 0.00-255.00, brightness range -1.00-1.00, or invert colors. This setting's chosen option will not be saved and applied on boot unless you select the <code>Save settings</code> option or edit it via the <code>config.ini</code>.

===Cheats...===
When inside a title where cheats have been selected for use (either through [[Checkpoint]] or through {{GitHub|LumaTeam/Luma3DS/wiki/Cheat-Engine|manually adding them to Luma}}, this menu shows the selected cheats. Press {{B|A}} on a cheat to change the <code>( )</code> to a <code>(x)</code>, at which point they will be activated when you leave Rosalina.
If the title you are currently in has no cheats selected for it, the menu will instead display <code>No suitable title found</code>.

===Plugin Loader===
When enabled, this option will [[3DS:Game plugins/3GX|allow for the use of .3GX plugins in games.]]

===New 3DS Menu...===
{{info|This option can only be used on a New 3DS/2DS.}}
A menu with New 3DS specific hardware and software options. Allows you to manually change how much CPU and L2 cache is given to the active title - this can also be changed in Luma3DS Configuration for all games. Enabling both extra clock speed and L2 cache may reveal hidden bugs in games, to unknown effect. Allows you to temporarily disable Super-Stable 3D; permanent disabling can still be done in System Settings. You can also test parallax barrier positions, or calibrate Super-Stable 3D's center position.

===Process list===
{{warning|Be very careful when editing system memory, as unintended consequences may happen.}}
Shows a list of all system processes currently running, and allows you to view & edit their memory by pressing {{B|A}} on a process name.

===Debugger options...===
{{Section WIP|notes=Information on how the debugger works.}}
{{warning|This option can potentially cause system instability or even crashes - don't use it unless you know what you're doing and why.}}
Allows you to enable/disable a debugger for apps, including forcibly debugging the next application launched. Also shows the system's local IP address in Rosalina while enabled.

===System configuration...===
Allows you to control various elements of the system's hardware.

====Control volume====
Allows you to set the volume of the console, overriding the physical volume slider. Because Luma3DS only directly affects NATIVE_FIRM, this will not work in DS games, GBA games, payloads such as GodMode9, or [[3DS:Safe Mode|Safe Mode]].

====Control Wireless connection====
Forcibly enables a connection to a chosen Wi-Fi slot - once active, this connection will not drop unless the signal becomes unavailable until manually disabled.

====Toggle LEDs====
{{Section WIP|notes=Make sure the list of disabled LEDs is accurate, and verify if the info regarding closing the system is actually erroneous or just bugged on one system.}}
When first pressed, disables the power LED, 3D status LED and wireless LED until re-enabled manually or if the system is closed and in sleep mode. It can be manipulated to not occur for some time.

====Toggle Wireless====
Toggles the 3DS' ability to connect to Wi-Fi networks. While toggled off, this stops <code>Control Wireless connection</code> from connecting to a slot. This setting's chosen option is saved and reapplied on next boot automatically.

====Toggle power button====
Toggles the power button's ability to enter the power-off menu. While toggled off, the power button can still be held for ~7 seconds to forcibly power off the system.

====Toggle power to card slot====
Toggles the 3DS' ability to read cartridges while active. This prevents the passive power drain from having a cartridge inserted, but requires you re-enable this setting or remove and reinsert the cartridge to be able to play it again.

====Change screen brightness====
Shows the current luminance of the screen and allows you to change it with the D-Pad - {{B|Up}} and {{B|Down}} increment by 1, {{B|Left}} and {{B|Right}} increment by 10. The change in luminance takes effect instantly, including inside Rosalina. Note that any action that restarts the system or enters a place where Rosalina cannot function will reset brightness to the last chosen preset.

===Miscellaneous options...===
Allows for various system tweaks. Three of these, which will be noted as they appear for reference, are used on our custom firmware installation guide.

====Switch the hb. title to the current app.====
When inside a title, changes the active title's HOME Menu icon to open the Homebrew Launcher instead until another title is chosen or the system reboots. This is used in both our [[3dsguide:ctrtransfer|CTRTransfer]] and [[3dsguide:region-changing|Region change]] guides to access the Homebrew Launcher and reinstall tickets.

====Change the menu combo====
Changes the keycombo used to access Rosalina. The change will not be preserved across a reboot unless you use the <code>Save settings</code> button.

====Start InputRedirection====
Starts the InputRedirection service to [[3DS:Input_redirection|allow for the use of external controllers.]]

====Update date and time via NTP====
Connects to a time server to remotely sync the 3DS' date and time, after a UTC offset in the form of<code>+0000</code> is chosen. The chosen time zone can be saved to Luma3DS Configuration via the <code>Save settings</code> option.

====Nullify user time offset====
Changes the embedded RTC clock to match the 3DS' current date and time (RTC + user time offset), then sets the offset to 0. This is done in our custom firmware guide as a part of [[3dsguide:finalizing-setup|Finalizing Setup]].

====Dump DSP firmware====
Copies the file <code>dspfirm.cdc</code> to <code>sd:/3ds</code> to allow homebrew apps to use the 3ds' audio. This is done in our custom firmware guide as a part of [[3dsguide:finalizing-setup|Finalizing Setup]].

===Save settings===
Saves the current NTP time zone, the active screen filter, and any changes to the Rosalina keycombo to <code>sd:/luma/config.ini</code>.

===Power off / reboot===
After a confirmation button press, powers off ({{B|A}}) or reboot ({{B|Y}}) your console. Note that powering off this way takes longer to fully shut down compared to doing it from the POWER button menu, however the reboot option takes far less time than both the <code>Power off</code> Rosalina option and manually rebooting via the POWER button.

===System info===
Displays various system info including: screen type (top and bottom), [[3dbrew:FIRM#NATIVE_FIRM|Kernel version]], [[3dbrew:MCU_Services#MCU_firmware_versions|MCU FW version]], PMIC vendor, and Battery vendor.

===Credits===
Displays a credits page for the creation of Luma3DS and all its contributors.

==Rosalina Info==
In addition to system functionality, Rosalina also displays multiple pieces of system information.
At the bottom of the Rosalina menu, in order from left-to-right, the following are displayed:
*The Luma3DS version number
:*Unlike the Luma3DS configuration menu, this will not display the full commit name for [[3DS:Luma3DS forks|Luma3DS forks]]
*The current battery temperature, in °C
*The current battery voltage
*The current charge percentage, displayed to the nearest 0.1%

'''Custom themes''' are a set of graphics and sounds that can be applied to your HOME Menu to give it a bit more personality. They are built on the same framework as the official themes that can be found on Nintendo's theme shop.

Custom themes are available on USA, EUR, and JPN firmwares. They are partially implemented but inaccessible on KOR firmwares, and entirely unimplemented in CHN and TWN firmwares.
Installing a custom keyboard has many advantages:

*Typing Japanese characters on a non-Japanese system
*Using the full-width font that's used on the Wii
*Using characters from the DS keyboard that were removed on the 3DS (e.g. the button icons and PictoChat faces)
*Using other normally-inaccessible characters in the 3DS system font

==How to Install==

#Download the latest version of [https://github.com/cooolgamer/3DS-custom-keyboard cooolgamer's custom keyboard] from [https://github.com/cooolgamer/3DS-custom-keyboard/releases/ this page] (choose light mode or dark mode).
#*Make sure you don't already have a custom keyboard installed.
#With the SD card in your 3DS, hold the {{B|START}} button while booting to open GodMode9.
#Press the {{B|HOME}} button, choose ''Scripts'', and run the ''Custom Keyboard'' script.
#Wait for it to load, '''read the messages before accepting them''', and press {{B|A}} to reboot your 3DS.

AnonymousUser98: /* Game Boy Color / Game Boy */ Mentioned that mGBA can be used as a GB(C) emulator.

{{hatnote|3DS:EMU redirects here. For EmuNAND, see [[3DS:EmuNAND and RedNAND]].}}

An '''emulator''' is a piece of software that uses computing power to simulate another device, such as a video game console or a personal computer. As a general guideline, the original Nintendo 3DS is capable of emulating most popular home consoles up to around the {{iw|wikipedia|fourth generation of video game consoles}} (the SNES/Genesis era), while the New Nintendo 3DS series is (just barely) capable of emulating some of the {{iw|wikipedia|fifth generation of video game consoles|fifth generation}} (the N64/PS1 era).
<br>This is because emulation requires significantly more computing power than running the console natively - though even if it could run emulated games as efficiently as native playback, even a new model 3DS would still only be able to emulate the {{iw|wikipedia|sixth generation of video game consoles|sixth generation}} (the Xbox/PS2/Dreamcast era) and possibly the Wii.

The Nintendo 3DS has hardware that allows for native backwards compatibility with the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance, meaning such software can run at full speed as they would on the original hardware. While this is not actually emulation, methods that use this hardware will be included here due to the ubiquity of the term.

==Handheld video game consoles==

===Nintendo DS===
{{Main|3DS:DS games}}

Nintendo DS software can be played natively using nds-bootstrap, a tool that allows NDS backups to be run from the SD card. In most cases, you will use either TWiLight Menu++ or NDS forwarders to launch the ROM, after which nds-bootstrap will do the hard work of getting it to run.

In the past, Nintendo DS flashcarts were a popular way to run Nintendo DS software. Because of nds-bootstrap's development over the years, they have become less and less necessary, but can still offer useful features like being able to use the flashcart on unmodded 3DS-family and DS-family consoles (depending on the cartridge).

===Game Boy Advance===
{{Main|3DS:GBA games}}

Game Boy Advance software can be played natively by leveraging AGB_FIRM, something built into every 3DS that allows for native playback of Game Boy Advance software. AGB_FIRM was only ever used officially as part of the Ambassador Program for early purchasers of the original Nintendo 3DS before its price was cut.

The current recommended way to run GBA software is [[3DS:open_agb_firm|open_agb_firm]] due to its drag-and-drop functionality and ease of save file access. open_agb_firm runs as a payload (similar to GodMode9), meaning it is not directly accessible from HOME Menu (requiring a reboot to enter/exit) unless an alternate bootloader such as [[3DS:fastboot3DS|fastboot3DS]] is combined with [https://gbatemp.net/download/open-agb-launcher.36828/ Open AGB Launcher].<br>
If you want to use another method but still want icons directly on your HOME Menu, you can [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|create Virtual Console injects]] on a Windows device.

GBA games can also be emulated, the recommended emulator being [[udb:3ds/mgba|mGBA]]. This is the best option if you wish to use cheats and save-states, but performance will rarely be full-speed on old models and some games will not work correctly.

GBARunner2 is a middle ground between native playback and emulation, similar to Nintendont on the Wii - this means it has none of the emulator features and the reduced compatibility of an emulator.<br>
It is included with TWiLightMenu++ (which you may already be using for NDS software), but because of the other options available, it isn't recommended.

===Game Boy Color / Game Boy===
The Game Boy Color and Game Boy are old enough that all models of the 3DS (and even the DS) can run them at full speed. The historically popular GB(C) emulator has been [[udb:3ds/gameyob-3ds|GameYob]], but due to 3DS-specific issues the [[udb:ds/gameyob|DS version]] is preferred (ran through TWiLight Menu++). [[udb:3ds/mgba|mGBA]] can also be used.<br>
You can also [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|create Virtual Console injects]] for GB/GBC games if you prefer to play your games from the HOME Menu.

The multi-platform GB(C) emulator [https://github.com/RossMeikleham/PlutoBoy/actions PlutoBoy] is currently under active development. A GitHub account is required to download the automated builds.

===Game Gear===
Currently only possible through [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|Virtual Console injects]].

===Virtual Boy===
Possible with [[udb:3ds/red-viper|Red Viper]]. All officially released Virtual Boy games run at full speed on all models of 3DS. Red Viper has various features such as customizable screen colors and 3D support.

===WonderSwan===
Possible through the Mednafen (WonderSwan) core on [[3DS:RetroArch|RetroArch]]. Performance has been reported to be slow on Old 3DS
units. Also possible with [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|Virtual Console injects]].

===Neo Geo Pocket / Neo Geo Pocket Color===
Possible through [[udb:3ds/neopop-sdl|Neopop-SDL]]. Also possible with [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|Virtual Console injects]].

==Home video game consoles==

===PlayStation 1===
Possible through the PCSX ReARMed core on [[3DS:RetroArch|RetroArch]] (named <code>pcsx_rearmed_libretro.cia</code> in the <code>cores</code> folder), with playable speeds on '''New 3DS only'''. A partial compatibility list can be found [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pl2bTkzTe736EOaQjk8FBWY9ixfgoNSYSitbm5Gnyqs/edit#gid=0 here], and optimal configuration can be found [https://www.reddit.com/r/3dshacks/comments/jvkotb/full_speed_psx_finally_here_on_new_3ds_new_2ds_xl/ here]. Also possible with [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|Virtual Console injects]].

===Nintendo 64===
''Barely'' possible on '''New 3DS only''' through [[udb:3ds/daedalusx64-3ds|DaedalusX64-3DS]]. A partial compatibility list can be found [https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/DaedalusX64_3DS_Compatibility_List here]; most games are incompatible or run very slowly.

===Super NES===
Possible on both Old and New 3DS using an [[udb:3ds/snes9x-updated-fork|updated Snes9x fork]], which is optimized so that many SNES games can run well on an Old 3DS. It also has extra features such as custom game borders, the ability to play on either screen, an improved cheat menu and more. Additionally, New 3DS users can create [[3DS:Virtual_Console/Creation|Virtual Console injects]] that use Nintendo's official SNES emulator, while Old 3DS users can create injects that use modified version Snes9x.

===TurboGrafx-16 (PC Engine)===
Possible through [[udb:3ds/temperpce|TemperPCE]], as well as [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|Virtual Console injects]].

===NES / Famicom Disk System===
The NES is old enough that all models of the 3DS can run it at full speed. The recommended emulator is [[udb:3ds/virtuanes|VirtuaNES]].<br>
you can also [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|create Virtual Console injects]] if you prefer to play your games from the HOME Menu.

===Sega Genesis / CD / 32X / Master System===
Possible through [[udb:3ds/picodrive|PicoDrive]], covering the Genesis / Mega Drive and its add-ons (the Sega CD and 32X) as well as the Sega Master System. It is apparently reasonably well-optimized for Old 3DS. Also possible with [[3DS:Virtual Console/Creation|Virtual Console injects]] with the exception of the Sega CD.

==Arcade cabinets==
WIP

==Home computers==

===DOS / Win9x===
Possible through {{GitHub|MrHuu/dosbox-3ds/releases/latest|DOSBox-3DS}}. Tested mostly on New 3DS. Windows 3.1 and 95 technically ''work'', albeit extremely slowly; this emulator is much more practical for older DOS games.

===Commodore 64===
Possible through [[udb:3ds/vice3ds|Vice3DS]].

===Amiga 500===
Possible through [[udb:3ds/uae3ds|uae3DS]].

==Other==

===Calculators===
[[udb:3ds/omega|Omega]], a custom firmware for the Numworks graphing calculator, has a simulator available for the Nintendo 3DS.

[https://gbatemp.net/download/wabbitds.7859/ WabbitDS] is a TI-83 Plus emulator for the Nintendo DS. It ''might'' work on the 3DS under TWiLight Menu++ or through a DS flashcart.

===RetroArch===
{{Main|3DS:RetroArch}}
[[udb:3ds/retroarch|RetroArch]], a frontend for many emulators and more is available on the 3DS. Keep in mind that most standalone emulators offer better performance.

==Overview chart==
WIP

==Emulators that don't exist==

These are consoles or devices that will not work on the 3DS, usually due to computing power requirements.

*GameCube/Wii/Wii U/Switch
*PlayStation 2 and newer
*PlayStation Portable and Vita
*All Xbox consoles
*Dreamcast
*Windows NT (XP/Vista/7/etc)

==Emulating the 3DS itself==

To emulate the 3DS on another platform, Azahar is the recommended option. Other options include [https://mikage.app Mikage] and [https://github.com/wheremyfoodat/Panda3DS Panda3DS].

==Pages==

===Organization===

Once this wiki has "enough content" (whatever that means), before we can start advertising it publicly, we need better page organzation.

*Index/contents pages? Generally anything someone might want or need to do with hacks. Save backup and restore, transfers, troubleshooting, informational pages, etc. Similar to [[3DS:Things to do]] but that one is more like "here's a list of cool things you can do".

===Main Page===

A nice [[Main Page]] should be made. It should include a simple explanation of what homebrew is, then links to the main guides, the "Things to do" pages, and maybe troubleshooting.

A search box could be put here too.

<pre><nowiki>
<inputbox>
type=search
placeholder=Placeholder text here...
width=70
</inputbox>
</nowiki></pre>

===Console introductions===

These pages should be like an all-around intro to things about hacking a console. Links to guides on getting hacks set up, links to the "things to do", maybe troubleshooting for when things go wrong...

I'm not sure how necessary these pages are though, if there isn't enough stuff that can't also go on the "Things to do" pages. [[User:Ihaveahax|ihaveahax]] ([[User talk:Ihaveahax|talk]]) 02:52, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
:In my opinion they should be the main hub for everything related to the console itself with quick and easy access/links to the most important articles and console related help pages. Could also include highlights from the "things to do" page or apps '''-[[User:zsotroav|zsotroav]]''' ''([[User_talk:zsotroav|Cantact me here!]])'' @ 18:34, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
===Game pages===

I think we should have pages for individual games with lists of mods, save editors, guides, and maybe other things.

I just picked a random assortment of some popular games. Any game with a mod, save editor, useful hacking guide, etc. can have its own page!
Some pages could be moved from the main guides to here.

===General concepts===
{{ombox
| type = speedy
| text = '''Reminder: DO NOT COPY GUIDES FROM OTHER SITES.''' Those who wrote the original guides own them and it is up to them if they want to post them anywhere else. (If the license is compatible with [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ CC BY-SA 4.0] then you are allowed to put it here with attribution.)
}}

Ideas for new pages. Some of these pages already have established guides, which can be used as a reference (but may not be copied directly, depending on permission, and some of them may be out of date anyway)

I think it might be of some use to add a "piracy" page, explaining what piracy is, how to determine if you are a pirate, and why we don't allow piracy talk, sorta like https://3ds.eiphax.tech/piracy, but with some more detail on how it applies to the wiki and Discord server in specific. [[User:Hifinerd|Hifinerd]] ([[User talk:Hifinerd|talk]]) 01:21, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

The term "piracy" usually refers to the ethical side of the issue, not the legal side. For example, pirating a game is piracy (which is copyright infringement and either illegal or legally grey in most places), but "pirating" a program that's free (or a game you already own) should not be considered piracy (it would be considered "copyright infringement" or "technically illegal according to the DMCA"). In simple terms, it's only "piracy" if it harms developers. [[AnonymousUser98]] (July 27, 2026)

==Translations==

The pages being moved from 3ds.hacks.guide or wiiu.hacks.guide might have translations that need to be brought over.
Also pages on how to translate stuff on this wiki need to be made too.

*Create lots of redirect pages. Someone will probably search things like "Pokemon x" or "Fix black screen" so we should create those pages that point to the right place. This needs some automation too.
*Make it more obvious that a revision other than the main one is being viewed. Preferably with a MediaWiki hook but JS will probably do.

The {{Iw|wikipedia|Wii}} is a home video game console released by Nintendo in 2006. In its release lifecycle, three different console revisions were produced; the original RVL-001 model with GameCube ports, the Family Edition RVL-101 model without GameCube ports, and the mini RVL-201 model with a complete internal revision. All Wii revisions run the same system software, however internal differences and region differences could lead to accidental bricks if not paying attention to correct homebrew methods. The console was succeeded by the [[Wii U]] in 2012 and was discontinued in October 2013.
3DS:Flashcarts

AnonymousUser98: Added small paragraph to Sky3DS section

{{Page WIP}}
There are two kinds of flashcarts that the 3DS can use: DS-mode (such as the R4 family) and 3DS-mode (such as Gateway-3DS). DS flashcarts are still sometimes used in custom firmware setups (though [[3DS:nds-bootstrap|nds-bootstrap]] is usually a better option, [[3DS:ntrboot|ntrboot]] is a more practical use of the cart in those cases), while 3DS flashcarts have fallen out of favor due to CFW entirely replacing their functionality.

==DS flashcarts==

DS flashcarts refer to any flashcart that runs in DS mode. While such flashcarts may have 3DS in the name (e.g. "R4i SDHC 3DS RTS"), they do not support 3DS games. You can verify this by seeing if the cartridge supports the DS family of consoles (DS / DS lite / DSi). If it does, then it is a DS-mode flashcart.

Most modern DS flashcarts work on the 3DS just as they did on the DS and DSi. [[3DS:Luma3DS|Luma3DS]] re-enables flashcarts that were blocked through 3DS updates, such as the Acekard 2i. The flashcart blacklist has not been updated since system version 7.x (released in 2013), so any flashcart made after that year should work on unmodified consoles, even on the latest firmware.

Old flashcarts that never worked on 3DS or DSi firmware (such as the original R4) can still be used on the 3DS with some workarounds.

{{ambox|text=TODO: List the workarounds.}}

==3DS flashcarts==

{{critical|text=3DS flashcarts have been entirely superseded by [[3dsguide:index|custom firmware]] setups. Even if you have an old 3DS-mode flashcart lying around, you should not use it; they are at best cumbersome and at worst a potential brick risk if you're not very careful. '''No support on flashcart-based setups will be provided on this wiki or by affiliated support channels except for the purposes of migrating people ''off'' of flashcart-based setups.'''}}
There were three major 3DS-mode flashcarts released over the lifespan of the 3DS: Gateway-3DS, Sky3DS, and Stargate. Any other flashcarts are clones of one of these cartridges (most likely Gateway-3DS).

===Gateway-3DS===

'''Gateway-3DS''' was the first flashcart for the 3DS, and one of the earliest ways to run 3DS games from a flashcart. It required its own custom firmware to function, generally relying on an out-of-date SysNAND (often on 4.x or 9.x) and an up-to-date EmuNAND. Most 3DS flashcart clones are based on this cartridge.

Gateway-3DS came with two flashcarts, one blue and one red. The blue one was just a traditional DS flashcart that was occasionally required to install an exploit to run custom firmware, while the red one was the 3DS-mode flashcart.

The cartridge/custom firmware is notorious for its implementation of a clone flashcart detector which could trigger at random for genuine flashcarts, and when triggered, would cause a software brick in the 3DS. This ''was'' notable for being the only software brick that requires a hardmod to fix, but '''recent developments have created a way to fix gateway bricks via ntrboot.''' For assistance with this fix, {{ml|Get support|join the Nintendo Homebrew Discord}} and ask, in English, for help.

Gateway's custom firmware no longer works properly on the latest firmware and is generally not compatible with boot9strap-based setups. If you have such a setup, you should [[3DS:Migrate from Gateway|migrate away from it]].

===Sky3DS===

'''Sky3DS''' is the other most common 3DS flashcart. Unlike Gateway, it doesn't require modifications to the console to use. Sky3DS cartridges work by pretending to be a retail cartridge and cycling through games through a physical button on the cartridge, so they cannot be used to directly run homebrew applications (they can, however, be used to run *hax through cartridge-based exploits).

Because Sky3DS is not a legitimate cartridge, it does not have the private headers that are available on a genuine cartridge. Users of Sky3DS cartridges may therefore get banned from online play unless they get a donor header from a genuine cartridge, but due to the nature of private headers the same header can be used for all games ran through this method.<br>
Sky3DS cartridges still work on the latest firmware, but because of how cumbersome they are, custom firmware is considered to be vastly preferable.

Additionally, some of the older Sky3DS carts have a limit to the number of games you can play. They keep track of which games you've played, and once you reach the limit, it won't let you play any other games (even if you delete some), forcing you to buy another cart.

===Stargate===

'''Stargate''' was a short-lived 3DS flashcart released in around 2018. It was most likely developed by the same team between Gateway-3DS. The main feature of this flashcart is that it offers three functions in one: it is an NDS flashcart that is capable of ntrboot with Sky3DS-style 3DS cartridge emulation for playing 3DS backups.

Using its ntrboot feature, Stargate offered its own boot9strap-based custom firmware installation pack with generally weird payloads. If you have such a setup, you can probably migrate away from it by wiping your SD card and following [[3dsguide:updating-b9s|Updating B9S]]. Otherwise, the cartridge can still serve as a DS flashcart / ntrboot cartridge. The 3DS cartridge emulation should be avoided for the same reasons as Sky3DS cartridges.
==Pages==

===Organization===

===Main Page===

A nice [[Main Page]] should be made. It should include a simple explanation of what homebrew is, then links to the main guides, the "Things to do" pages, and maybe troubleshooting.

A search box could be put here too.

<pre><nowiki>
<inputbox>
type=search
placeholder=Placeholder text here...
width=70
</inputbox>
</nowiki></pre>

===Console introductions===

I think we should have pages for individual games with lists of mods, save editors, guides, and maybe other things.
}}

Custom firmware has a lot of settings and useful menus. Learn to use them here!
